The SNS number, known in Portuguese as the
Número Nacional de Utente,
is your identification number within Portugal’s
public healthcare system.
It is used when accessing public health services,
including health centres, hospitals and other SNS services.

Assignment of a family doctor
(médico de família) is a separate matter
and depends on availability. Receiving an SNS number does
not guarantee that a family doctor will immediately be assigned.
